The Model S was the top-selling plug-in electric car in the United States between 2015 and 2017. Until the middle of 2016, the Model S was the world's second best selling EV right after the Nissan Leaf. Although the more affordable Tesla Model 3 is now the company's strongest seller -accounting for 14% of the world's EV sales in 2019, the Model S still proves desirable in the US as it ranks among the top 5 selling electric cars in 2018 and 2019. Despite that it looks like a family saloon, its performance can challenge many sports cars -the likes of Aston Martin, Ferrari or Lamborghini. Two electric motors -one driving the front axle and another one the rear wheels- provide an enormous blast of power capable of a lightning 0-62 mph (0-100km/h) acceleration in 2,3 seconds -enough to embarrass even the most exotic supercars. Its autonomy is really impressive at 400 miles (640 km) according to the WLTP test procedure. Thanks to the standard Autopilot system, the car can navigate itself with no driver interaction. Model S even features a Bio-Weapon Defense Mode by creating positive pressure inside the cabin in order to protect its occupants from pollutants and bacteria. The dashboard incorporates a 17 inch infotainment touchscreen that can automatically update the software commanding the Media Player, Autopilot, Maps and Trip Planner. An ultra fast 120 kW Tesla Supercharger can fully charge the battery in just over an hour, enough to travel more than 300 miles (480+ km). According to Tesla's estimates, charging costs are significantly lower compared to the fuel costs of an ordinary car. For a distance of 500 miles the cost of using a Tesla Supercharger equals to 39$ in the US -the gasoline equivalent would cost 68$. According to Tesla, the charging cost estimate assumes Supercharger cost of $0.26 per kilowatt hour. The company reminds us that actual costs may differ since they depend on the vehicle's location, configuration, battery age and condition. There are additional factors affecting range -such as driving style and operation as well as environmental and climate conditions.
